Idaho: Campus Carry Legislation to be Heard in House Committee!

On Wednesday, March 9 the House State Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on important pro-gun legislation, House Bill 222.  This bill would allow for the lawful carry of a firearm on college and university campuses.  Liberal higher education administrators are in strong opposition to this bill, so HB 222 will need your help passage in the legislature.

Regarding: ISCAC Position Memo on Continuing Resolution FY11 State
Wildlife Grant & American Wetlands Conservation Act Programs:

On behalf of the Idaho State Rifle and Pistol Association; we have

discussed this position paper in regard to grant monies and the American

Wetlands Conservation Act program. In general we would support the

activities that preserve and enhance game habitat and our ecosystem.

At another level, it seems repulsive that we should have funding

collected (generally tax dollars from us) at the federal level, then pay

a bureaucrat at the federal level to decide how much of that money we

should be able to get back through a grant for a cause that we like and

support. Simply cutting out the middle man, the federal government in

this instance, seems much more efficient and appropriate. The notion that

these grant monies are somehow “free money” is pervasive and

ill-conceived.

As sportsmen’s groups, I often hear us claim with pride that our sporting

activities in Idaho are supported by sportsmen’s dollars and our IDFG is

not funded with general funds from the state. I would suggest that to be

consistent with that creed, we should not be dependent upon federal

monies, either, with the exception of Pittman-Robertson funds which are

generally collected from firearms purchasers. The merits of that

particular federal tax and redistribution can be saved for another day.

So, in general we support the mood and movement in Congress to reduce

federal government spending in ALL areas including this State Wildlife

Grant program and the North American Wetlands Conservation Act.

We oppose the position paper presented and we would appreciate having our

position distributed to the ISCAC member organizations.

Idaho: Permitless Carry Introduced in the Gem State

As of President’s Day, the Idaho Senate had introduced Senate Bill 1126 and assigned it to the State Affairs Committee. Commonly known as Permitless Carry legislation, this bill would amend the existing concealed carry law to allow law-abiding Idahoans to carry a concealed firearm without the burdensome requirement of acquiring an Idaho carry permit. The approval of this pivotal legislation would bode well for law-abiding citizens of Idaho who wish to protect not only themselves but family and friends alike.

In Idaho today it is generally legal to carry a firearm openly as long as one is at least 18 years of age and not prohibited from possessing a firearm. However, if the firearm becomes covered with a coat, or if a woman prefers to carry a firearm in her purse, one needs to possess a concealed carry permit. The intent of this legislation is to give honest people the greatest possible freedom to choose the best method of carry for them, based on attire, gender, and/or physical attributes.

Act Immediately to Block ATF Long Gun Sales Reporting!
If you’re one of the nearly 71 million Americans who live in the four southwest border states, some of your gun purchases could soon be reported to the federal government. And whether you live in one of those states or elsewhere, your help is needed now to stop the federal government’s plan to register Americans’ gun purchases.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is demanding the authority to require all of the 8,500 firearm dealers in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas to report all sales of two or more semiautomatic rifles within five consecutive business days, if the rifles are larger than .22 caliber and use detachable magazines. For example, a dealer would have to tell the government every time a deer hunter in Sacramento or Amarillo finds a good deal on a pair of semi-auto .30-06s like the popular Remington 7400.

The ATF has no legal authority to demand these reports, and the flood of new paperwork will waste scarce law enforcement resources that should be spent on legitimate investigations.

Unfortunately, there are only a few days left to comment on this proposal. Comments will be accepted until Monday, February 14. Every concerned gun owner’s voice should be heard on this critically important issue.
